BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën released details of the technologies in their new gasoline engines, the first to be jointly developed and produced by their cooperative venture announced in 2002. Beginning in 2006, the engines will equip small and mid-size cars produced by the Peugeot and Citroën marquesas well as future models of the Mini. Production is expected to eventually total around on million units a year. Two types of engines have been described: a 1.6-litre normally aspirated unit with a variable valvetrain and a power output of 85 kW; a 1.6-litre direct injection, turbocharger unit with a power output of 105 kW. The new models are the first in a family that will eventually comprise engines delivering a range of power outputs from 55 kW to 125 kW. They will feature on-demand oil and water pumps, single belt drive for ancillary components, composite camshafts, and cylinder heads produced by lost foam casting. Try to figure out
1) How do you convert kW to PS.
2) Why does the car industry still use the obsolete term 'PS' in ads? 3) Look for "Vollformgiessen" in your Fachkunde Metall. Visit these Internet sites: http://www.ray-vin.com/casting/lostfoam/lostfoam.shtml http://www.lostfoam.com/feature/article.shtml?key=1 and compare 'lost vax casting' to 'lost foam casting'. 4) Why have diesel engines become popular for passenger cars in the past few years? 5) Diesel engines don't use spark plugs.
